On the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, where the ocean’s rhythm sets the pace of life, a young woman named
Solimar is charting her own course. As both a marine biologist and one of the youngest female captains in the region, Solimar is proof that passion and perseverance can take you far beyond the shoreline. Her journey combines a love for the ocean with a commitment to protecting it, inspiring others along the way.

A Brief Background on Solimar

Solimar’s story begins with a deep curiosity for the ocean and its ecosystems. She pursued her studies in marine biology in “La Universidad de Puerto Rico de Humacao”, where she learned about coral reefs, sea life, and the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. While her path started in science, opportunities on the water quickly pushed Solimar into leadership roles. She embraced the challenge, learning how to navigate vessels, manage a crew, and keep guests safe—all while protecting the marine environment.

Fun Facts About Solimar’s Journey

  • She was actually turned away the first time she applied to the SPR team because she was still too young to join the team. However, once she became a college student, she reapplied and became a crewmate all while studying.
  • One of her favorite moments as captain is seeing kids light up when they spot marine life for the first time.
  • She believes that teaching people about the ocean firsthand is the best way to inspire conservation.
  • She has already written her first book on life on the reef and a look in to our local marine life.

What’s Solimar’s Advice to you?

There are many ways you can support/help protect Puerto Rico’s coastal ecosystems:

  • Book eco-conscious tours with companies that prioritize conservation.
  • Learn about local marine life before your trip—ask your guides questions!
  • Support community conservation programs like reef restoration and beach clean-ups.
  • Encourage younger generations to explore careers in science and the outdoors
