 Season in Puerto Rico: The Good and The Bad of Traveling During This Time

If you’re planning a getaway to Puerto Rico between June and November, chances are you’ve heard the word “hurricane” and are wondering if it’s a good idea to travel during this season. The truth is, like with most things, there are pros and cons. Here’s what you need to know so you can decide with confidence and make the most of our beaches and turquoise waters.

When Is Hurricane Season?

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. However, not every month carries the same level of risk:

  •  June and July: low activity, a great time to travel
  • Early August: risk begins to rise
  • Mid-August through late October: the historically most active window
  • November: threat starts to decrease

In other words, “hurricane season” doesn’t mean six months of constant bad weather. Most days, even in the middle of August, the sun is shining and the sea is just as turquoise as ever.

The Good: Reasons to Travel During Hurricane Season

  •  Fewer crowds, more beach for you Many travelers avoid these months out of caution, which means quieter beaches, less crowded boats, and a much more intimate experience at spots like Icacos or Vieques.
  •  Better prices Flights, lodging, and tours tend to be more affordable during these months, since it’s the island’s off-peak tourism season.
  •  The weather is often spectacular between storms Contrary to what many people think, most summer and fall days in Puerto Rico are sunny, warm, and perfect for the water. Rain tends to be brief and localized.
  •  Warm water year-round The Caribbean Sea stays warm and inviting, making it ideal for snorkeling without needing a wetsuit.

  •  Possible cancellations If a storm or hurricane forms near the island, tours may be canceled for safety reasons. It’s important to build flexibility into your itinerary, especially between mid-August and late October.
  •  Intense heat and humidity Summer months in Puerto Rico are hot and humid, so staying hydrated and applying sunscreen regularly is a must.
  •  Sudden rain showers While usually short-lived, tropical downpours can appear without much warning, especially in the afternoons.
  •  You’ll need to keep an eye on the forecast It’s worth checking the National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast a few days before your trip and throughout your stay, especially if you’re visiting in August, September, or October.
