Experience the Magic of Vieques Bio Bay

Bioluminescent waves glow blue on a beach at night with stars visible.

Puerto Rico is home to one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth: bioluminescent bays. While there are only a handful of these glowing ecosystems in the world, Puerto Rico is fortunate to have three of them, making the Island a bucket-list destination for nature lovers.

  • Mosquito Bay – Vieques Island

  • Laguna Grande – Fajardo (East Coast)
  • La Parguera – Lajas (South-West)

What Makes the Vieques Bio Bay So Special?

Long before ferries and tourism, the island of Vieques was inhabited by the Taíno people, who relied heavily on the surrounding waters for food and transportation. Throughout the centuries, the island became known for sugar plantations and cattle ranches before entering a very different chapter in the 1940s.

For over 60 years, much of Vieques was occupied by the U.S. Navy for military training exercises. While this period shaped the island’s history, it also unintentionally left large portions of land undeveloped. Following the end of military operations in 2003, much of the area became protected under the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, preserving some of the most pristine beaches, mangroves, and marine ecosystems in the Caribbean.

Today, Vieques has transformed into a paradise known for eco-tourism, quiet beaches, colorful Esperanza village, and of course, the spectacular Mosquito Bay.

The magic behind Mosquito Bay comes from millions of microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates. When the water is disturbed by fish, paddles, or even your hand, these tiny organisms emit a bright blue-green light through a natural chemical reaction known as bioluminescence

People paddle transparent kayaks glowing at night on a starry lake.

Mangrove forests surrounding the bay provide nutrients that help these organisms thrive, creating ideal conditions for one of the brightest displays found anywhere on Earth. Every paddle stroke creates glowing trails beneath your kayak, making it feel like you’re paddling among the stars.
